Upton Bishop Big Dipper (5.64 miles) 26th Sept

Wasn’t intending to compete in this one when I arrived home on Sunday morning at 4am following a “few” drinks on the town. Following 4 hours sleep, I decided to go ahead and race the Big Dipper. Feeling slightly (fairly…very..) groggy on arrival in the race HQ I met my only Courier teammate, Kev Barnes. The course is best described as a much much MUCH hillier version of the Hereford 10km route! 34mins and 4secs after the starting whistle, i somehow entered the finishing funnel in 2nd place, 30 seconds behind the race winner Stacey Morgan (Croft) and 50 seconds ahead of Jon from Malvern Joggers (who finished 2nd in this years Muddy Woody). Kevin Barnes completed the course in 40mins and 04secs, his fastest Big Dipper time in the 5 years the event has been organised. Presentation was held in the village hall where the results had already been printed off and displayed. Every prize winner, along with their award, was given a strong strong bottle of cider, a nice touch, but probably the last thing I could have wanted!

Overall a great race, excellent venue in the village hall, fantastic home made cakes (that’s a very important one..! Ask Kev) well marshalled, 2 drink stops and I thoroughly reccomend this event for next year.

Presteigne 2 Rivers Knill Knash Dash

A small field of just 28 runners turned up for the third running of the 2 Rivers. Couriers were represented by Matt James, Eliot Taylor and Kevin Barnes. The course (8.7miles) was undulating and muddy throughout from the previous nights rainfall. Matt beat the course record which he had set last year but finished in 2nd place behind Jon Pugh who proved stronger on the long and gruelling course. Behind Jon Pullen Eliot Taylor (who has finished 4th every time this race has been ran) finished in…yep you guessed it, 4th place! Crossing the line in 8th position was the ever reliable Kevin Barnes, who also won his age group. Although no team prize was awarded (why I don’t know?) we would have won it!

Also runners who competed who also ran the Hurtle the week before had nothing but praise for the event and praised the wonderful course…and cakes! All was very good to hear and hopefully a much larger field will be there next year.

Eliot.
