Cross Country News – October 2025
The Cross Country Winter Season is fast approaching and if you are not sure whether you should give it a try this year lets hear from our newly appointed ladies captain Kate Watts,
Thinking about giving cross country a go?
When I first started running cross country, it was back at school – and like many of us, I didn’t think much more of it afterwards. It wasn’t until I joined the club that I picked it up again, and I was reminded of how challenging, muddy, and rewarding it can be!
I’ll be honest – it hasn’t always been easy. Earlier this year, I ran the infamous Muddy Woody race, and it was one of the hardest runs I’ve ever done. I came away exhausted, frustrated, and even in tears, thinking I would never run another cross country. But with some gentle encouragement (and a bit of persuasion in the form of chocolate at the finish line!) from fellow club members, I gave it another try – and I’m so glad I did!
Getting stuck in again reminded me of what makes cross country so special: the camaraderie, the laughter, the chance to test yourself in new ways, and that unbeatable feeling when you cross the finish line covered in mud but grinning from ear to ear.
Now, I’ve completely fallen back in love with it, and I’d love for more of our female members to experience that same joy. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or brand new to it, cross country is about giving it a go, supporting each other, and finding strength you didn’t know you had.
So, if you’ve ever thought “maybe I could try cross country” – this winter is the perfect time. Come along, get muddy, and see what it’s all about. Who knows – you might surprise yourself, just like I did!
Hope to see many of you on the start line,
Kate, Women’s Cross Country Captain
