HATTERALL HAMMER (Category A short fell race) 20/2/16

Really awful conditions greeted the 54 runners who turned out for the third edition of this race and were required to carry full body cover such was the force of the wind and rain. Underfoot, the grassy slopes were treacherous in the extreme and we decided to take out the final road descent so slippery had it become.

Well done to Steve Littlewood, Tracy Miles and Martyn Peters who all zipped round the course in fine fettle.

There was tremendous Courier support on the day and thanks to Kev (sweep runner), Hannah, Mark, Rich Wall, Hazel, Bev, Sheryl, Max, Russ, Carol, Sky who all did their bit and more. Steve L presided over the presentation in the Old Pandy Inn, in inimitable style. We are grateful too for the invaluable help of Mike Blenkinsop and Kay and Martin Lucas who were wondering why Couriers don’t like being summit marshalls!
Thanks to Alan McCardle of Hay Hotfooters and The St Margarets Cider Company for supplying bespoke prizes. Please no more complaints about the labels!

Above all credit for the day’s success goes to Clive who marked the course early in the morning and was on recording duty as the runners came home. What a stalwart!

Despite the appalling conditions, the race was warmly received and the food laid on at the pub heartily devoured.

In summary, worth getting soaked to the skin for!
