Couriers Andy Tyler & Mike Link raced the Fan Y Big horseshoe race over 10 miles (2,200 ft) up Fan Y Big in the Brecon Beacons National Park on Saturday 7th June, on one of the hottest days of the year so far.
The race which started in the village Llanfrynach, went onto fields with plenty of stiles and gates whilst making the climb up towards Cefn Cyff then on to the summit of the Fan Y Big. At the midway point Mike was in a strong 37th place reaching the peak in 52:48 with Andy close behind in 40th passing the summit 53:15. After the runners hit true high point of the race (754m) start the long descent in towards Bryn which is very technical in places. Andy finished the race in 34th (1:39:03) With 3 miles left to race Mike had a fall ending up with a red chin to match his red vest but was able to dust himself off to finish in 36th (1:39:46) as a result Mike had to pop to A&E in Hereford for a post-race checkover & he still managed watch England.
Great to get a few red vests over the boarder at this event, who’s up for it next year?…..
