FINAL XC TEAM POSITIONS 2014-2015
No Sweat……….but quite a lot of perspiration!
For the second year running, Couriers are the men’s League Champions, a really great effort given that we were without our talismanic Eliot for the final two fixtures. Fortunately – and as we had planned – we started our campaign back in October with an overwhelming show of strength, with Eliot rampant, which gave us the necessary momentum to stay clear of new boys, Maldwyn, through the long winter. In the end, we won by three points, despite having a rather threadbare squad on the cold morning of the final Presteigne event, run over a course of 6.3 miles featuring some very fast downhills and a couple of steep ups.
Matt, on whom we have relied so heavily this season, had another excellent run here, beating his rival Stephens of Monross for third. Not so far back in 10th, Russ demonstrated the quality he has always had and which is emerging again thanks to his track sessions with Bill Berry. There was a bit of a gap then before Rich and Mike finished in close order in 23rd and 24th respectively to complete the team. All credit to these four, three of whom are not exactly in the first flush of youth, for performing so consistently well throughout the season and putting younger men in their place.
Talking of youth [and its opposite] next home was the poor old Kipper, still on 1.5 legs, in 41st, just keeping his nose in front of neighbour, Neil, on the long haul back to race fitness, in 43rd. Like Matt and Neil, Kev ran every fixture and here finished 67th.
“Well, at least there were a few deep water splashes but I don’t know why they lined ’em with quick sand. Took me a few minutes to pull meself outa the bloomin things…the water was up to me flippin draw strings!”
In the separate shorter women’s event, off quarter of an hour before the men’s, Ali, another ever-present this season, was well up in 11th, but again, sadly, our only representative.
We had a good number of Series Award winners with Matt 3rd overall, Russ 1st V45, Rich 1st V50, Geoff [only at Presteigne for the cakes and his medal] 1st V60, Steve 1st V65 and Ali 3rd V50.
The summer series will be with us in June….we desperately need a stronger women’s squad if we are to challenge and go for the elusive winter/summer double team champs. Ali can’t do it all on her own!
