Hereford Duathlon: 5 mile Run – 19 mile Bike – 2.5 mile Run

Two Couriers took part in this event, myself and Luke Williams, representing Climb On Bikes (Eliot) and Hereford Tri Club (Luke) respectively.

With one lap of the White Cross sports field to jostle for positions before we hit the Three Elms Road, I found myself running alongside  Wye Valley Runner Christian Jones (also representing a different club). We then turned right at the roundabout and headed along Kings Acre before turning right along Huntington Lane and cutting across the fields back to the school. While cutting along the fields I pulled away from Christian and completed another lap. I finished the first run in 4th position, straight into transition, shoes off, cycle shoes on, helmet on, sunglasses on, unrack the bike.

The 19 mile bike was an undulating one, heading along the Roman Road, then right towards Yazor, left at Mansell Gamage before heading back in on the Brecon Road.  I was conscious of Luke’s biking ability and was constantly expecting him to fly past and it wasn’t untill the Brecon Road where he did pass me, shortly followed by Christian.  Luke clocked the 5th fastest bike time (48.39), whereas I managed the 17th fastest.

The big question now was had Luke and Christian built a big enough gap ahead of me on the bike for me not to catch them on the run?

Back into transition, bike racked, helmet off, sunglasses off, cycle shoes off, running shoes on. Back out onto the Three Elms road and Christian was in sight, the gap between us seemed to stay the same and I struggled to get into a rhythm. Turning right onto Huntington Lane I passed Christian, I had now settled down and was running fast but still was not comfortable. I then overtook another athlete who had previously passed me on the bike leg and then another, I now felt myself gaining momentum and striding out. White Cross School was now in sight, and more importantly so was Luke! The gap was getting smaller and smaller but was there enough distance for me to make the catch?! Would Luke hold on?!

I finished the second run with the 3rd fastest time (just 6 seconds shy of the quickest second run) in 14.53 and finishing 8th overall with a time of 1hr 36min 26sec. Luke’s overall time was 1hr 36min 17secs, finishing 7th!  Just 9 seconds divided us.

A great event, extremely well organised. I recommend this event to anyone, there is an option of a shorter route (2.5mile run – 19mile bike – 2.5mile run).

Interestingly during the last 200m I was passed by a familiar looking runner in a Couriers vest, I think he’s called James Matt?

Last year the Magnificent 7 trail race was held on a beautiful sunny day and this years race was no exception. After registering, I was tipped off by Cliff Berry that there were a few boggy bits but nothing too concerning. Road shoes it was!

Red vest on, I met up with Tri Club’s Andy Taylor for the warm up, having both done the race last year we decided to do the first mile and half to familiarise ourselves with what we were in for, back to Race HQ with 10mins to go, where I was greeted with a smiling Jon Pullen.

One blast from the starting horn and we were off, I held back to about 15th for the first half mile, to suss out the pack and let JP go in the mean time. First hill after .75miles sorted out who was to become a threat and who wasn’t. First mile done in 6.29 and I was up to 9th. Second mile completed in 6.25, and now 7th, I could see JP with 2 other runners, the gap stayed the same for another half a mile untill we began climbing. One runner in the group couldn’t handle the Muddy Woody Champion’s pace and soon lagged behind, he now became my target and I closed him down gradually and passed him after 4 miles. I remained 6th for the rest of the race, unable to catch up with my Blue vested friend who finished 5th after loosing out to a Mercia Fell Runner.

Course conditions identical to last year, I finished the Mag 7 in 44mins 47secs, 2mins 18secs quicker than last year.

Fellow Couriers were Alison Cooke and Neil Lewis.

Easy week now to wind down and prepare for the duathlon next Sunday,

See you at the 5km

So, what began at Moor Park back in October, ended here on the wooded hills of Presteigne at February’s end. On a new and improved course, with less hard surface than previously, nine hardy Couriers braved a chilly morning in Wales once again for this season’s 5th and final league fixture. Again, sadly the women did not have a full team but where quantity was missing, quality shone through with Nicky 9th and Amy 15th. Nicky finished the season as 2nd V40 while Amy was Champion Senior Woman.
In the men’s division, the team was 3rd on the day and 3rd for the season, a comedown on what we have been used to, but considering the severe depletion of our squad, a very creditable effort from those who turned out. Once again it was Eliot who led the way in an excellent 4th less than 2 minutes down on the winner, Jon Barnes. He revelled in the tough conditions and finished the season 2nd junior man behind Jon. Behind Eliot there was an epic battle between our two outstanding V45s, Max and Rich, Max this time winning out in 14th with Rich just a place behind. The two were neck and neck too in the overall competition with Max securing 2nd spot to Rich’s 3rd only with this run. Several spectators were puzzled by Max’s shorts which looked suspiciously like Peacock’s best boxers available from the Buttermarket. However, whatever their origins, they clearly allowed him the freedom to perform without inhibition. Given that he had achieved third position in a fell race the previous day, there were some quite uncalled for suggestions that the briefs, or whatever they were, were chemically loaded. I want to scotch such rumours here and now.
Completing the team was skipper Dave Williams who once won us the League on this very course. Dave has had a tough year with injury and colds but will always turn out when he can, finishing on this occasion 26th which is not a true reflection of his ability. Behind him, Pete once again got the better of Steve H, 30th to 32nd, winning V50 silver while Steve was 1st V60. Close on their heels, Kev drove through the line in 40th, eyes a-poppin, sweat flying, calves tight as a drum and thighs slapping against one another with a sound that terrified the wood pigeons and Gary Gunner alike. Another full season for Kev….you can’t keep this man down!
And so on to the 5K Series and the Summer League……..
